Employee's Holidays for cash

Published 01 Jun 2009

This year, the Government will be reviewing the Holidays Act 2003. As part of this review, it plans to introduce changes to allow employees to "cash up" their fourth week of annual holidays.

Under the proposed legislation, the employer would not be able to insist that the employee take cash for the fourth week. The employee must make the request, which would be subject to agreement with the employer.

Unions have expressed concern regarding this, alleging that it is indicative of the Governments desire to eventually compel employees to take cash instead of holidays. However it would be a foolish employer that did not allow an employee time to relax and revitalise.

Please be aware this is not law yet.
